An overload clutch
is an automatic tool that safeguards mechanical equipment from damage caused by mechanical overload. The device, also known as a torque limiter, can limit torque by slipping or disconnect. The action of an overload clutch is highly useful to minimize the damage caused by jams and crash stops. Overload clutch may be packaged as a hub for a sheave or sprocket, or as a shaft coupling. Torque Limiting TypesTorque limiters can be categorized into two main groups; the slip type and disconnect type. Disconnect overload clutches limit torque by physically disconnecting the drive from the load through various methods such as shear pin, magnetic disconnection and manual re-engagement. The slip type limits torque by slipping which simply means that it lets the drive shaft run quicker than the driven shaft. Any excess power is consumed as heat and they do not require resetting.
