A die is a tool used in manufacturing to cut or shape materials. Like in molds, dies are customized to the specific items being created. They are classified into several groups.
1) Steel-rule die: This die, also known as cookie die, is used for cutting sheet metals and soft materials such as felt and wood. The cutting edges are made of hardened steel strips called rules. The mating die can be designed of a flat piece such as steel.
2) Rotary die: This is a cylindrical shaped die that can be used in diverse manufacturing fields. It can be used for cutting corrugated materials of thickness larger than 2mm.
3) Wire pulling: These dies are designed with a hole in the middle. Then, a rod of copper, steel or other material is passed through and reduced in size to make a finished product. To use the wire pulling die, a lubricant such as soap powder is added.
4) Hex die: These dies are designed for tough cutting applications such as creating external threads of nuts
