Description:
A hose barb is a cylindrical
pipe fitting that is designed for the attachment of a flexible-plastic or
rubber tubing. The barb has a set of ridges or rings on its outer surface that grips the inner diameter of the tubing or hose that is attached to it. The orientation of the rings or barbs makes it easy to push-on the hose but difficult to pull it off. The hose expands during installation then contracts to grip the hose barb after installation. This creates a tight seal around the hose barb. In many applications, the hose barb seal is sufficient, however, a clamp or screw-on fitting may be necessary to strengthen the seal. The quality of the seal and hose barb connection depends on a wide range of factors such as the internal diameter of the tubing, number of the barbs, shape, and style of the barbs and the flexibility of the tubing.
