Cylindrical roller bearings utilize a modified cylindrical roller that provides line contact with the inner and outer ring raceways. They are suitable for high speeds and have a high radial load capacity. The rollers are guided by ribs on either the inner or outer rings. Depending upon the configuration, the bearings may or may not be able to accept any axial loading. The inner and outer rings are separable which may aid in the assembly/disassembly of components The NU Type bearings has shoulders on both sides of the outer ring and no shoulder on the inner ring. This allows the shaft to move axially for thermal expansion. Some sizes may be available in a high capacity design (EG) that has larger diameter rollers and a polyamine cage. Stamped steel or machined brass (MY) cages are generally used. These bearings are most commonly used in pumps, compressors, gearboxes, transmissions, rolling mills, crushers and pulverizers. This bearing is often used in high speed applications. Separable components simplify mounting and removal. Long life. Heavy radial load capacity. Not suitable for thrust loads. Accommodates axial expansion and contraction. Effective when the bearing rings require interference. Low friction between rollers and flanges. No redial load capacity due to no flange of outer or inner ring. Used a non-locating side. Inner ring without rib. Outer ring with ribs on both sides([JIS B 1533).
How do I choose the right type of bearing for my application?
Start with the load and how it’s applied. You need to know if you’re dealing with radial loads, axial loads, or a mix of both. Then look at speed, operating environment, and space constraints. For example, ball bearings are great for high speed and lighter loads, while roller bearings handle heavier loads but usually at lower speeds. If there’s contamination, moisture, or heat involved, you may need sealed bearings or specific materials. In most cases, the right choice comes down to matching load type, speed, and environment to the bearing design.
