Floating Solar Technology Headed To California

Dec 23, 2015

A floating solar plant technology, one of its first kinds has become a reality in Australia. Infratech Industries, an Australia-based company has sold its technology to Holtville city located in California. Now, they plan to make the first export of the renewable energy system over water.

The company has completed the first installation of a $12 million, 4 Mega Watt photovoltaic systems in South Australia in the month of April, to serve as its showcase project. The bulk components of the one MW Holtville system, including 3576 panels, 276 rafts, and 12 treatment pumps – will be manufactured in Australia.

At Holtville’s water treatment facility, the exported floating solar system is will generate an estimated twenty per cent more power than a land based solar photovoltaic power system. It will also generate the water plant’s power that will save water and improve its quality by reducing the need to use treatment chemicals.

This is a progressive approach to infrastructure and the environment and a solid proof of what is possible when people look to sustainable and renewable infrastructure projects to power their communities.

With the system able to float on water, it will be able to withstand earthquakes – and high waves. Holtville will ensure the availability of its water supply and the energy requirement during any such crisis. The system is expected to be fully installed and operational by mid-2016.
