Frozen Metal Furniture and not Welded

November 11, 2015

Making furniture is going to be innovative as designers are increasingly branching out beyond traditional materials and techniques. The British designer Paul Cocksedge has been working with different metals that will eliminate the need for welding. He is using metal freeze methodology for joining them. He has been developing this technique for the last five years.

Cocksedge is using liquid nitrogen to freeze metal components together. In the beginning he is burying copper table legs in snow overnight, and then later they were inserted into pre drilled holes in an aluminum table top. When frozen the metal warms up and to fit snugly into the hole, without the need for any welding joint.

By this technique now even coppers, stainless steels, brasses, bronzes and various other metals can be joined together. The new innovative design was appropriately named Freeze. After working with snow, Paul started to experiment with liquid nitrogen by pouring it onto metal. He recently completed a spiral staircase in an office building in London that featured a library, garden, and a tea bar.
