World’s Largest Solar Farm

Mar 24, 2016

A Chinese company Xinjiang SunOasis is building the largest solar farm in the world. One of the first big solar power plant in Pakistan that took only three months to install a 100 MW, 400k-panel pilot power project. The plant started selling electricity to the grid recently.

It’s a $130 million project on nearly 500 acres of land in the Cholistan desert in Pakistan. It is the first part of a larger China-Pakistan Economic Corridor deal of worth $46 billion. Once the entire project is complete in 2017, the site could have 5.2 million photovoltaic cells that will produce as much as 1,000 MW of electricity that will be enough to power about 320,000 households.

The area has thirteen hours of daily sunlight and its flat desert bed make it ideal for a solar farm. This could be one of the first steps to reduce Pakistan’s carbon footprint. Pakistan has severe energy shortages for many years with many rural areas left without power for up to 20 hours a day. This solar park will not only bring renewable energy, but it will also generate 15k to 30k jobs for locals and attract investment to the region.
