How do I read a Gates 8MGT Poly Chain GT Carbon part number, and which sizes are standard? This product
The part number gives pitch, pitch length in mm and width in mm, so 8MGT-1200-62 is an 8mm pitch belt, 1200 mm long (150 teeth) and 62 mm wide. Gates lists standard 8mm lengths from 8MGT-640 (80 teeth) to 8MGT-4480 (560 teeth) in four widths: 12, 21, 36 and 62 mm. Matching sprockets use the 8MX code: 8MX-48S-12 is a 48 groove sprocket for a 12 mm belt. The smallest stock 8mm sprocket in Gates' tables has 22 grooves.
What are Gates 8mm short-length Poly Chain belts, such as 8MGT-416-36? This product
Gates makes 8mm Poly Chain GT Carbon belts below the standard 640 mm range, in 352, 416, 456, 480, 544 and 608 mm lengths (44 to 76 teeth) and 12, 21 and 36 mm widths. They use the same construction as standard Poly Chain GT Carbon belts but have a smooth back instead of the ribbed back, because of the way they are made. They run on standard Poly Chain GT2 sprockets and suit compact, high-torque drives such as roller-to-roller live roller conveyors. MROSupply lists them as 8M Short Length belts.
My old belt is a PowerGrip GT3 1120-8MGT-30. What replaces it? This product
Gates converted 8M and 14M stock PowerGrip GT3 belts to PowerGrip GT4 from around March 2020. The part number stays the same (1120-8MGT-30), but the Gates product number prefix changes from 9356 to 9579 with the same last four digits, so 9356-0038 becomes 9579-0038. Gates says GT3 and GT4 match in fit, form and function, with GT4 adding 10 to 30 percent capacity in most applications. Do not fit either one on Poly Chain 8MX sprockets: Poly Chain belts and sprockets are a separate system.
What is the Gates 8GTV belt and when do I need it? This product
8GTV is the 8mm Poly Chain Carbon Volt belt, the static conductive version of Poly Chain GT Carbon, for drives where a static discharge is a hazard, such as dusty or potentially explosive atmospheres. Gates states it meets ISO 9563 for static conductivity over the full life of the belt and runs on Poly Chain GT2 sprockets. Conductivity only helps if the whole drive is grounded (belt, sprocket, bushing, shaft and bearings), and Gates advises a static conductive brush as extra protection in hazardous areas. Part numbers follow the GT Carbon pattern, for example 8GTV-1440-62, in the same 12, 21, 36 and 62 mm widths.
What belt mass constant do I enter on a Gates sonic tension meter for an 8mm belt? This product
Gates lists adjusted mass constants in grams per meter per mm of belt width. For 8mm Poly Chain GT Carbon it is 4.7, for 8mm PowerGrip GT4 it is 4.85, and for the older 8mm PowerGrip GT3 it is 5.8. Enter the belt width in mm (21.0 for a 21 mm Poly Chain belt) and the span length in mm. Gates says Poly Chain GT Carbon has such high resistance to stretch that the drive does not need re-tensioning or take-up after installation, so getting the installation tension right matters.
