Soft starts are designed to reduce the start-up torque of a motor by limiting the amount of current it can draw. This regulation of inrush current protects the motor from burning out and reduces the rate of wear of the machine’s components. This is necessary because the inrush current of some motors can be up to 8 times higher than their rated current.
Soft starters are usually placed between the motor and its power source to reduce the voltage going into it. Once the motor has started, the soft start gradually restores the required voltage levels and allows it to operate at its optimal torque.
Soft Starts are commonly used in conveyors
and industrial ventilation fans
. Soft starts also make it possible to start many machines at the same time without overloading your power lines. Contact our experts at MRO Supply if you have any questions about how to choose a soft start for your machinery
