Various kinds of electric transformer are made for different functions. Despite their layout differences, the various kinds share several key practical parts, and use exactly the same basic principle found by Michael Faraday in 1831.
Laminated center

They may be available in power ratings that range from mW. The laminations that are insulated minimizes eddy current losses in the iron center.
The rectangular centers are composed of stampings, generally in E- pairs are shaped by me, but other forms are occasionally used.
Electronic equipment transformers and little appliance may have a thermal cut out[clarify] assembled into the winding.
Toroidal
Toroidal transformer
Doughnut shaped toroidal transformers conserve space compared to E-I centers, and occasionally to reduce outside magnetic field.
Toroidal transformers can be smaller for certain power rating, and have a lower outside magnetic field in comparison with rectangular transformers. Nevertheless, they cost more to make, as slower and more complicated gear is required by winding.
They are able to be mounted by a bolt through the centre, using rubber pads and washers or by potting in resin.
