Its current ratio usually describes the CT from primary to secondary. Typical current ratings that are secondary are 1 ampere or 5 amperes, compatible with conventional measuring instruments. The secondary winding have several tap points to supply a wide selection of ratios or can be single ratio. Caution must be taken to ensure the secondary winding isn't disconnected from its low-impedance load while current flows in the primary, as this may forever change the correctness of the transformer and may create a perilously high voltage across the open secondary.

Wideband CTs that were specially built can also be used, generally using an oscilloscope, to quantify pulsed currents or high frequency waveforms . One kind provides a voltage output signal which is proportional to the current that is measured. To be able to supply a proportional output signal another requires an outside integrator.

A current transformer is used by a current clamp with a cracked core that is easily wrapped around a conductor in a circuit. This can be a standard technique used in current measuring instruments that are mobile but long-term facilities use more efficient kinds of current transformer.

Electric and electronic gear was made to work on normal supply voltage When the supply voltage is always too high or too low, (generally more then 55%), the equipment does not function at maximum efficiency A dollar and increase transformer is an easy and efficient means of correcting this off-normal voltage
