Electric Drive Unit that lasts for 1,000,000 miles?

November 21, 2015

Tesla is developing an innovative electric motor that could last for 1,000,000 miles. They have enhanced their drive unit endurance from being approximately 200,000 miles to being a million miles. The objective is to design drive units that just never wear out.

The company is confident enough that they are providing infinite mile warranty on both the battery pack and drive unit on their most popular model 85 kWh Model S. The warranty extension will be effective for all Model S vehicles that were produced earlier.

For large drive units, Tesla engineers used automatic grease injection into the spline and calculated how much grease is needed in the spline. Premature wear happens if not enough grease gets into the spline.

Electric vehicles are considered superior to gasoline’s ones due to less mechanical complexity, a very few moving parts, no oily residue or fuel byproducts. 100% electric vehicles don't need much maintenance, and that's the reason why big car dealers are fighting Tesla so hard.  The innovative motor design might make the gasoline counterparts obsolete. The company suggested that most of the previous technical (and software) issues were fixed as of now and the new design will certainly meet consumers expectation!
