How do I read a Gates 14MGT Poly Chain GT Carbon part number, and which sizes are standard? This product
The part number gives pitch, pitch length in mm and width in mm, so 14MGT-1750-37 is a 14mm pitch belt, 1750 mm long (125 teeth) and 37 mm wide. Gates lists standard 14mm lengths from 14MGT-994 (71 teeth) to 14MGT-4410 (315 teeth) in five widths: 20, 37, 68, 90 and 125 mm. Matching sprockets use the 14MX code: 14MX-36S-37 is a 36 groove sprocket for a 37 mm belt. The smallest stock 14mm sprocket in Gates' tables has 28 grooves.
Can a Gates PowerGrip GT4 14MGT belt replace a Poly Chain GT Carbon 14MGT belt? This product
No. Both carry 14MGT in the part number, but Gates states that any Poly Chain GT Carbon belt must run on Poly Chain GT2 sprockets (14MX code) of the same pitch, while PowerGrip GT4 is a rubber belt for PowerGrip GT2 or GT4 sprockets. The widths differ too: Gates lists Poly Chain 14mm in 20, 37, 68, 90 and 125 mm and PowerGrip GT4 14mm in 40, 55, 85, 115 and 170 mm. PowerGrip numbers put the length first (1610-14MGT-85); Poly Chain puts the pitch first (14MGT-1610-68). Older GT3 numbers such as 3150-14MGT-55 carry over unchanged to GT4.
What if I need a 14mm Poly Chain belt longer than 4410 mm? This product
Standard 14MGT stock lengths stop at 4410 mm. Above that, Gates makes Poly Chain GT Carbon Extended Length belts, coded with EL after the length: 14MGT-6160EL-125 is a 14mm pitch belt, 6160 mm long and 125 mm wide. Gates applies the EL process to 14mm and 19mm pitch belts over 4410 mm, in endless lengths up to 20, 000 mm, and says to use Taper-Lock Poly Chain GT2 sprockets when designing a new EL drive. MROSupply lists 40 sizes from 4578 to 9660 mm. These are not stock-table sizes, so confirm availability of the exact belt before planning a shutdown around it.
What is the difference between Gates 14ADV (Poly Chain ADV) and 14MGT (Poly Chain GT Carbon) belts? This product
Poly Chain ADV is Gates' next step in the Poly Chain line, identified by a red nylon tooth facing. Gates states it carries about 15 percent more load than Poly Chain GT Carbon and intends it as a replacement on drives that need more capacity in the same space. It is 14mm pitch only, and Gates specifies Poly Chain GT2 14M sprockets for it, so it fits the same 14MX sprockets as 14MGT. Part numbers follow the same pattern with ADV in place of MGT, for example 14ADV-2730-37, in the same 20, 37, 68, 90 and 125 mm widths. Re-rate the drive in Gates drive design software before narrowing a belt on the strength of the extra capacity.
What belt mass constant do I enter on a Gates sonic tension meter for a 14mm belt? This product
Gates lists adjusted mass constants in grams per meter per mm of belt width. For 14mm Poly Chain GT Carbon it is 7.9, for 14mm PowerGrip GT4 it is 8.5, and for the older 14mm PowerGrip GT3 it is 9.7. Enter the belt width in mm (37.0 for a 37 mm belt) and the span length in mm. Gates says Poly Chain GT Carbon has such high resistance to stretch that the drive does not need re-tensioning or take-up after installation, so getting the installation tension right matters.
