World’s largest waste-to-energy power plant

Mar 27, 2016

Chinese engineeres with the help of a group of Danish architects are making the largest waste-to-energy power plant in the world. The huge incinerator will eliminate more than 5,000 tons of waste daily, is part of China’s long term strategy to reduce growing garbage collection by looking at alternative methods of energy generation.

The power plant aims to showcase waste-to-energy production as an important solution to handle growing waste by using it to generate electricity. The plant is under construction in China’s south-eastern city of Shenzen. The city is also also known as the tech manufacturing capital of the world. The proposed power plant is expected to burn atleast a third of the Shenzhen’s city waste generated by twenty million residents every year. Waste is piling up at the city’s four overloaded landfills, and such waste-to-energy power plant is certainly a step towards solving that problem.

More than 65 percent of the plant’s ceiling area will be fitted with photovoltaic solar panels, which will be used to generate direct electricity. China is planning to build more than 300 such plants within the next several years to give a strong message to the world about its commitment towards curbing environmental problems. There's been quite a bit of debate about whether the process is truly "green," but such plants are being built in many countries as the most efficient and clean near-future option for dealing with trash and power generation in urban areas.
