History

TB Wood's Incorporated was established in 1857 as a foundry that produced wood burning stoves. At the turn of the century, the company entered the power transmission industry. In 1945, TB Wood's launched its newest product: the quick detachable (QD) Bushing system. During the early 1950s, the company introduced synchronous timing belt drive systems as well as variable speed pulleys. It was during 1957 that its Sure-Flex® couplings were developed and patented. In 1968, TB Wood's introduced DC controls that were designed specifically for severe manufacturing conditions. During the 1970s, the company allied itself with Uniroyal and began to manufacture as well as market synchronous belted drive systems and high torque drives. In 1984, the company started marketing AC inverters. The company continued to introduce new products in the market during the 1990s - a new line of AC inverters, two new synchronous drives, a micro AC drive, and a new elastomeric coupling line. In 2007, the company was acquired by Altra Holdings, Inc. The company also sold its electronic business to Vacon, a company that supplied adjustable speed drives worldwide.
