In most of the pulleys
used in industrial systems, the grooves in any sheave are similar in every aspect. But the step sheave deviates from that design. The step sheave is a type of sheaves
that features several grooves with a stepped outlook. This means that the groove at one end has a shorter diameter while the one on the other end has the largest diameter.The pulley is used in operations where you need to change the speed of operation without changing the sheave. All that you need is shifting the belt to a different groove. The pulleys are operated in pairs to make changing operational speed easy. When you fit a belt on the biggest pulley of the driving shaft and on the smallest pulley on the driven shaft, the effect will be increased output speed. However, fixing the belt on the small pulley of the driving shaft and on the biggest pulley of the driven shaft will generate more torque but lower the speed. Some of the common applications that use step sheaves/ pulleys include milling machines and lathes.
