World's largest commercial aircraft engine

Apr 26, 2016

At GE Aviations test operation center in Peebles, Ohio, the world's largest commercial aircraft engine has been fired up for the first time. Engine has been started for data gathering on the engine's aerodynamic performance, aero-thermal system and mechanical verification for flight testing and certification before it is made available for commercial usage. Flight testing will start in 2018.

GE9X front fan spreading a full 11 ft has a world record that can generate thrust up to 100,000 lb. Peebles testing facility was upgraded with extra fuel tanks and high temperature gear to feed the giant engine and make the design more efficient.

The engine is being developed for the 777X airliner. It features a composite fan case made from carbon-fiber. Weight is controlled by using ceramic matrix composites, which allows the turbine and combustor to handle temperatures of up to 1,315º C for greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions. In addition, it has 3D-printed fuel nozzles, the complex architecture, which has not been made public yet.

The Accessory Drive Train (ADT) and a low-pressure turbine and kit help regulates the unit and distributes its energy for various other functions via an inlet gearbox, accessory gearbox and transfer gearbox.
