48 Frame Single Phase Motors

A single phase motor is a type of AC motor that has a single-phase power supply to the stator. Unlike three-phase motors, it does not typically feature a self-starting mechanism. A simulated rotating field created by a capacitor, auxiliary winding, or something similar is required to get the rotor to start moving. Single phase motors have a low starting torque, making them suitable for low torque applications. They are generally used in devices, machines, and equipment that are small in size and do not require a lot of horsepower. Some examples of these include fans, portable drills, handheld grinders, pumps, refrigerators, and other domestic appliances. Single phase motors are simple and easy to construct, making them cost less. They require very little maintenance and are easy to repair. Moreover, this type of motor is very reliable.

Single phase motors are available in different types - split phase motor, permanent split capacitor motor, shaded pole motor, and two value capacitor motor. This type of motor is also available in various NEMA frame sizes. NEMA stands for National Electric Manufacturers Association which developed a set of standards for motor frame sizes. This means that motors with the same power output, speed, and enclosure will have the same frame size, regardless of the manufacturer who produced them. The mounting-base dimensions as well as bolt-hole sizes are also the same for motors with the same three-digit frame sizes. Take note that the NEMA frame size does not provide information on the overall size of the motor.

According to NEMA standards, three-digit frame numbers are considered integral frames while two-digit frame numbers refer to fractional horsepower motors. The frame number of the motor refers to its “D” dimension which is the distance from the center of the drive shaft to the center bottom of the mount. The letter suffix, on the other hand, refers to key information about the motor - how it is mounted, what it is used for, the type of shaft, etc. All 48-frame motors have a "D" dimension or shaft height of 3 inches.
